The IRS uses Letter 2050 to ask you to call them about your overdue taxes or past due taxes. But, the number they give you to call is to Collections, not a help line.

The IRS believes you owe them so the letter is used for collection of taxes. The case may also involve unfiled returns. They have probably already sent a Notice of Intent to Levy so the IRS could levy against your assets or wages at any time. Although they are not required, the IRS will likely send another Notice of Intent to Levy to you.

However, in many cases, no tax is really due. We need to defend against collections while compiling the IRS file and your evidence to prepare an Action Plan for your specific case. Some returns may have to be filed & your financial information revealed.

Your response should be carefully planned, not rash & impetuous. It is most likely you’ll have to complete a Form 433A or Form 433F.
