Expired Tax Refund Check: How to Request Help

Understand the one-year check limit, identify your notice, and ask the IRS about the correct replacement or research procedure.

Reviewed October 30, 2026 • Federal individual income tax refunds

Quick answer: An IRS refund check generally cannot be cashed after one year. Check for a CP32 or CP32A notice. CP32 says a replacement was sent; CP32A asks you to contact the IRS to request one. If you have no notice, call the IRS with the payment details. Follow the specific instructions for the old check, and do not change its date or attempt to use both payments.

An expired tax refund check needs payment research or reissuance help. Finding an old check does not automatically mean the underlying refund has disappeared, but it also does not establish that a replacement is ready.

This guide covers federal individual refund checks. State refunds and privately issued refund-transfer checks follow their issuer’s rules.

When does a federal refund check expire?

Federal refund checks are subject to a one-year cashing limit, also called limited payability. Look at the issue date on the check. The tax year printed in your records is not the same as the check’s issue date.

Do not alter the date, use a different endorsement, or assume mobile deposit avoids the limit. Ask the IRS to research the payment and explain the proper next step.

FICTIONAL TEACHING EXAMPLE

A check relates to a 2023 return but was issued in 2025. The check’s age is measured from its issue date, not from the end of tax year 2023.

This example explains the distinction; it does not determine a particular check’s exact expiration or replacement eligibility.

If a bank refuses a newer check, ask for the reason. A name, endorsement, or account-policy issue is different from expiration.

CP32 vs. CP32A: read the action carefully

Similar notice numbers, different next steps
Notice What it means What to do
CP32 The IRS says it sent a replacement for the expired check. Watch for delivery and call the notice number if it does not arrive within the stated period.
CP32A The IRS needs you to contact it to request a new check. Call the number on the notice and verify your address.
No notice available You have not established whether a replacement was issued. Contact the IRS with the old payment details.

The CP32 guidance says to expect the replacement within 30 days from the notice date. Call the listed number if it has not arrived.

The CP32A guidance says to call to obtain a new check and describes a 30-day sending period after that contact. Record the case-specific instructions you receive.

Do not assume a CP32A replacement is already in the mail. Keep the notice and a record of your response.

How to request help with an expired tax refund check

  1. Identify the payment. Record the payee names, tax year, amount, and original issue date.
  2. Locate correspondence. Find any CP32, CP32A, replacement notice, or earlier inquiry confirmation.
  3. Confirm the mailing address. Explain a move, address error, or separate spouse addresses.
  4. Contact the IRS. Use the verified notice number, or call 800-829-1040 if you have no applicable notice.
  5. Ask what happened to the original. Establish whether it expired uncashed, was returned, or was negotiated.
  6. Record the next action. Note whether a replacement was released, documents are needed, or further research is required.
EXPIRED CHECK CALL SCRIPT

“I have a federal refund check issued on [date] for [amount], related to [tax year]. It was not cashed, and it is now over a year old. I [have/do not have] notice [number]. Can you confirm whether a replacement was issued and tell me what to do with the old check?”

Have your filed return and identity-verification information available. If you do not know whether someone cashed the payment, say that instead of certifying it remained uncashed.

Should you return or destroy the expired check?

Follow the instructions for your case. CP32 and CP32A guidance says to destroy the old check. Form 3911, however, tells a person holding a check that was not cashed within a year to contact the IRS for return instructions.

These instructions apply in different contexts. If you have a notice, follow its directions. If you are unsure, ask before mailing or destroying the original. Keep the payment details needed for your records.

Do not use a generic mailing address. If the IRS asks you to return the check, verify the destination and required accompanying information. Do not send it to a paperwork-comments address or assume every refund form uses the same unit.

If a replacement later arrives, make sure you understand which payment is valid. Do not attempt to deposit both.

What if the expired check is also missing, returned, or cashed?

Tell the IRS which facts apply
Situation Question to ask
You still hold the uncashed expired check. Is a replacement already recorded, and what should I do with the original?
You never received the check. Does the account require an older-payment inquiry or limited-payability research?
The check was returned as undeliverable. Is address verification or release action needed?
The IRS says it was cashed. Which negotiated-check claim package and deadlines apply?
The payment includes an older special-program amount. Do program-specific rules require additional account review?

Older checks can follow limited-payability procedures rather than the same route used for a recently mailed check. Do not assume current-year automated trace options cover the payment.

If the IRS requests Form 3911 or another claim form, complete the applicable paperwork. A phone inquiry does not eliminate later document requests.

Check expiration is different from the deadline to claim a refund

The one-year limit concerns using the check. The deadline for claiming a tax refund concerns the underlying tax claim. Those are separate issues.

The IRM explains that, in ordinary expired-check reissuance cases, an expired refund-claim statute does not prevent reissuance when the refund was timely claimed and issued. That is different from filing a new, late claim for an amount never properly claimed.

However, old accounts and special-program payments can need additional review. CP32A guidance also cautions readers about refund time limits. Contact the IRS promptly and ask which rule applies to your specific issued payment. Do not assume either that the money is automatically lost or that every old payment can be reissued.

Do not file an amended return solely to make an expired check usable. Ask about the issued payment first.

Track reissuance separately from delivery

Record the notice date, contact date, and any confirmed replacement issue date. An address correction or research request is not proof that a replacement has been released.

Use the timeframe stated in your notice or supplied for your case. If it passes, ask about the existing inquiry rather than automatically submitting another request.

Can the replacement go to a different address or bank?

CP32 guidance says replacements are mailed to the address of record and are not converted to direct deposit through that notice process. Verify your address and follow the applicable update procedure.

A joint check may involve both payees even after a divorce. Tell the IRS about changed circumstances and request specific instructions rather than altering the payee information yourself.

Expired tax refund check: FAQs

Can my bank extend the check’s expiration?

Ask the IRS about replacement. A bank cannot make the original Treasury check valid indefinitely.

Does CP32 mean I need to request another check?

CP32 says a replacement was sent. Follow up if it does not arrive within the notice’s timeframe.

Can I ignore CP32A and wait?

No. The notice asks you to contact the IRS so it can arrange the next step.

What if I cannot find the original?

Tell the IRS. Ask which older-payment research or claim procedure applies.

Does an account credit prove a replacement was mailed?

No. Confirm the release and issue date of the replacement payment.

Does this apply to a state refund check?

No. Contact the issuing state agency about its validity and reissuance rules.
