Missing Refund Check After Moving: How to Resolve It

Find out whether your check is still in the mail, was returned as undeliverable, or needs a payment investigation. Then confirm the correct address for the next step.

Reviewed October 29, 2026 • Federal individual income tax refunds

Quick answer: If your refund check is missing after a move, verify that the IRS actually issued a paper check. Update your address with both the IRS and USPS. Next, determine whether the check was returned, remains outstanding, or was cashed. A returned check may require address verification and reissuance; an unlocated check may require a refund trace.

A missing refund check after moving creates two questions: Where is the payment, and does the IRS have the right mailing address? Resolving only one can leave the other unfinished.

This guide covers issued federal individual refund checks. It does not assume that every refund will be paid by check. Confirm your actual payment method and follow any current IRS notice.

Start with the payment status

Open Where’s My Refund? directly through IRS.gov. Read the complete message and record the issue date, method, and amount. A return accepted for processing is not evidence that a check was mailed.

Choose the next step from the evidence
What you can confirm Next step
No refund has been issued. Follow processing or notice instructions and update your address.
A check was issued recently. Confirm mailing details and the applicable delivery window.
The IRS says the check was returned. Verify your address and ask what is needed for reissuance.
The check has not arrived and is not shown as returned. Review refund-trace eligibility once the applicable waiting period passes.
You received the check and then lost it. Report that specific history; do not describe it as never delivered.
The check was cashed without your authorization. Follow the check-claim investigation instructions.

Keep the full IRS message. The word “sent” does not prove delivery to your new home, and an address update does not establish what happened to the original envelope.

Will USPS forward an IRS refund check?

Do not rely on forwarding alone. The IRS warns that some post offices do not forward government checks. A USPS address change may also update IRS records through postal data, but you should still notify the IRS directly.

Confirm your forwarding request with USPS and check that the new address includes the correct apartment, unit, ZIP code, and name information. If needed, ask your local post office about delivery problems.

Forwarding is not a refund investigation. It cannot tell you whether a check was canceled, returned, or negotiated. Use IRS payment research for those questions.

How to update your IRS address after moving

Form 8822, Change of Address, is the standard home-address form. Use the current instructions to choose the mailing destination. Form 8822-B serves business address changes.

The IRS also accepts certain signed statements and identity-verified address changes by telephone or in person. Filing a future return with the new address is another method, but an unresolved issued check needs attention now.

Prepare the information before contacting the IRS

  • Your full name and taxpayer identification information.
  • The old address shown on the return.
  • Your complete current mailing address.
  • The return and payment details you are asking about.

For a joint return, follow the spouse-information and signature rules for your chosen method. If spouses now have separate addresses, tell the IRS; do not assume changing one person’s address updates both records.

An ordinary address-change request generally takes four to six weeks after receipt to finish processing. That is not a promise that the refund will arrive within the same period.

If the refund check was returned as undeliverable

A returned check is different from a check whose location is unknown. Ask the IRS to confirm the returned-payment status, verify your current address, and explain the release or reissuance action required.

Where’s My Refund? may give a contact number when the postal service returns a check. Use that instruction or a verified notice. Do not automatically submit a lost-check trace when the IRS already has a returned-payment record.

What can a transcript show?

Code 740 can appear when a refund check is returned. However, IRS procedures also use Code 740 for certain expired checks. The code alone does not prove that your move caused the problem.

Read the surrounding entries and ask whether a replacement was actually released. A restored credit on the account is not the same as a new check arriving.

Ask this: “Was the original check returned as undeliverable, and is my updated address recorded for the replacement? Is any additional action required before reissuance?”

If the check is still missing: when to request a trace

For an ordinary domestic check that never arrived, IRS public guidance generally allows four weeks from issuance. The online trace procedure uses a 28-day threshold. Overseas delivery can require a longer waiting period, commonly nine weeks.

Tell the representative that you moved and whether forwarding was active. The IRM includes additional forwarding-related timing guidance, so do not apply one countdown to every situation. A check received and subsequently lost has a different history from one still awaiting delivery.

How to start the appropriate inquiry

Eligible taxpayers may use the refund tracker or automated hotline at 800-829-1954. Joint filers cannot initiate a trace through the automated systems; call an IRS representative at 800-829-1040 or follow the Form 3911 route.

If a written request is needed, use the current Form 3911 and submission instructions. State your current address and the prior address where requested. Both spouses must sign a joint-return Form 3911.

Ask the IRS to confirm that the address information supplied with the inquiry is sufficient for the account update. Avoid sending overlapping requests simply because you have not received an immediate response.

What if someone cashed the check?

The Bureau of the Fiscal Service may send a claim package containing a copy of the negotiated check. Complete that package as instructed. A disputed endorsement requires review; replacement is not automatic.

If the original check was not cashed, cancellation and replacement can be considered under the applicable procedure. Do not use an original check that later appears without checking whether it has been canceled.

Which date should you use for follow-up?

Keep these milestones separate
Milestone What it tells you
Original issue date When the first payment was issued.
Address-change receipt When the address-update processing period begins.
Trace start date When the payment investigation was opened.
Replacement issue date When delivery timing for a new check begins.

Ask which timeframe applies to your case and what event starts it. An address correction, payment investigation, and replacement delivery are separate stages. Do not add estimates together and treat the total as a guaranteed arrival date.

What to say when you call

MISSING CHECK AFTER A MOVE • CALL SCRIPT

“I moved after filing, and my federal refund check has not arrived. It concerns [tax year], [amount], issued on [date]. Can you confirm whether it was returned, remains outstanding, or was cashed? I also need to verify the mailing address and the correct next step.”

  1. Confirm the payment. Verify the tax period, amount, method, and issue date.
  2. Confirm the address. Ask whether the current address is recorded and whether an update is pending.
  3. Choose the procedure. Establish whether this is returned-check reissuance or a missing-payment trace.
  4. Record the next step. Note required documents, submission instructions, and the follow-up date.

Missing refund check after moving: FAQs

Will changing my address automatically replace the check?

Do not assume so. Confirm what happened to the original check and whether the IRS needs a release, trace, or additional response.

Should I file an amended return just to fix my address?

Use the IRS address-change process. An address correction does not itself establish a need to amend the tax calculations.

Does a missing check mean someone stole my identity?

No. Nonreceipt alone does not establish identity theft. Report the known facts and follow the investigation’s findings.

Can my preparer’s address change fix the IRS record?

Giving a preparer your new address is not proof that an IRS update was submitted or processed. Verify what was actually done.

What if I find the old check after requesting another?

Contact the IRS before trying to cash it. A cancellation may already be underway or completed.

Does this process cover state refund checks?

No. Contact the issuing state tax agency for its address-update and missing-payment procedures.
