IRS Code 810 Explained: A Refund Freeze on Your Account

Understand what the restriction does, why the cause requires more information, and how to find the next step that applies to your account.

Last reviewed: October 24, 2026 • Individual income tax accounts

Quick answer: Code 810 records a refund freeze. The IRS definition also covers restrictions on offsets and applying the credit forward. The code alone does not prove fraud, identify a specific review, or establish a refund date. Read the notice and full account to determine what is required.

A freeze can affect an account that already shows withholding or other credits. Seeing those credits does not, by itself, establish that the money is available for payment.

This guide explains how to distinguish the restriction, its eventual reversal, and separate refund activity. Start with the tax transcript hub if you need help reading the whole record.

What does IRS Code 810 mean?

IRS Document 6209 identifies Code 810 as a refund freeze. It restricts the tax-year account from refunding, offsetting, or applying credit forward while the applicable freeze remains in effect.

That is an account restriction, not a complete explanation of the underlying case. Keep the status question separate from the amount question.

The restriction

Code 810 records a freeze affecting use or release of account credit.

The balance

The account can still show credits. Their presence does not establish availability for payment.

The explanation

IRS correspondence and account details identify the issue and instructions.

Why can Code 810 show $0.00?

A status restriction can exist without adding or subtracting money through that row. A zero-dollar freeze entry does not mean the refund is zero or the freeze has no effect.

Is it a freeze on my bank account?

In this transcript context, Code 810 identifies a restriction on the IRS tax account. Do not treat it as proof that your bank account has been frozen or money has been seized from it.

Why did the IRS freeze this account?

You cannot reliably determine the reason from “810” alone. Current IRS procedures distinguish multiple responsibility codes and different review processes. The relevant internal information may not appear on your downloaded transcript.

Examples of context in those procedures include credit-related compliance review and preventative refund screening. A screening restriction is not, by itself, a final determination that a return is fraudulent or a credit is improper.

Ask a precise question: “Which issue or responsibility code is associated with this freeze, and what instructions apply to me?”

Do not assign yourself another taxpayer’s reason or waiting period because the same three-digit code appears.

Does Code 810 always mean an audit?

The code alone does not identify the process. Use the IRS correspondence to determine whether there is an examination, a document request, verification, or another account action.

Does it mean my credits were denied?

A restriction and a credit adjustment are different actions. Review later credit changes and any explanation of allowance or disallowance rather than treating the freeze itself as the final decision.

Does identity verification remove Code 810?

Do not assume every Code 810 requires identity or return verification. Follow a specific IRS verification letter when one applies.

If verification is requested, creating an online account is not the same as completing the requested return verification. Use the instructions in your letter and the official IRS verification guidance .

Completing that step does not establish that every separate restriction has ended. If Code 810 remains unresolved, ask whether another issue needs attention and which timeframe applies.

What should you do with an IRS notice?

Read the tax year, issue, requested action, submission method, and response deadline. A notice may request documents, explain a change, or provide a waiting period. The transcript code alone does not supply those instructions.

If a notice concerns a return you did not file, follow its identity-theft instructions. See IRS notice guidance .

Code 811 reverses Code 810—but it is not a refund

IRS definitions identify Code 811 as a reversal of Code 810, in whole or in part. The definition notes that a zero-dollar Code 811 can release the freeze and permit release of credit if no other freezes are in effect.

Code 811 is not a new manual-review code. It is a reversal entry. Whether a separate issue remains depends on the rest of the account.

Keep three events separate: Code 810 records the freeze. Code 811 reverses it wholly or partly. Refund issuance is separate activity.

Read the amount, other restrictions, later adjustments, and actual refund transactions before expecting payment.

What if I also see Code 570 or Code 571?

Code 571 reverses the related Code 570 hold. Do not treat that as a universal release of a separate Code 810 freeze. Read each restriction and its resolution in context.

See Code 570 explained and the refund freeze guide .

FICTIONAL TEACHING ILLUSTRATION — NOT A REAL TAXPAYER RECORD

This simplified ledger is not an IRS-issued transcript. Descriptions are shortened and dates are omitted. The running position is our educational annotation, not a standard transcript column. The sequence does not promise the same events or timing for your account.

Code Illustrative description Amount Running position
150 Original tax assessment $2,600.00 $2,600 debit
806 Withholding credit −$4,200.00 $1,600 credit
810 Refund freeze $0.00 $1,600 credit
811 Freeze reversal in this illustration $0.00 $1,600 credit
846 Refund issued $1,600.00 $0

At the freeze stage

The simplified credit is $1,600, but Code 810 restricts release. The row did not erase the credit or issue money.

At the reversal stage

The freeze reversal is separate from payment. The excerpt must still be read for other restrictions and later activity.

At the refund stage

The separate refund entry uses the $1,600 credit and brings the simplified position to zero. Real accounts may include later cancellation, reversal, or other changes.

Examples omit other credits, payments, penalties, interest, transfers, offsets, and prior refunds. They illustrate account relationships, not refund eligibility.

How long does a Code 810 freeze last?

There is no single waiting period that applies to every Code 810. IRS procedures vary by responsibility code, account conditions, correspondence, and actions already taken.

Some procedures contain long review periods; others depend on a specific response or stage of processing. Do not apply a 60-day, 120-day, 180-day, or post-verification timeframe to your account without establishing that it is the applicable instruction.

The date beside Code 810 is not automatically a deposit date or response deadline. Use your notice and any account-specific IRS explanation to identify the correct starting point and follow-up date.

If you are told to wait: Record what is pending, which date starts the period, whether any response is needed, and when to follow up.

What should you do after finding Code 810?

  1. Confirm the year and read the full account. Include the transaction history before and after the freeze.
  2. Check IRS correspondence. Identify any notice, request, or verification instruction and its deadline.
  3. Review your filed return and records. If something is unfamiliar or appears incorrect, identify the specific issue. Do not file an amendment solely because the code appears.
  4. Complete required actions through the stated channel. Save copies, submission confirmations, and follow-up instructions.
  5. Ask the IRS what remains unresolved. Identify the freeze’s basis, required action, and applicable contact timeframe.
  6. Read later release and refund activity separately. Do not treat a credit posting or unrelated hold release as proof of payment.

Questions to ask the IRS

  • Which issue is associated with this Code 810?
  • Which function or responsibility code controls the restriction?
  • Was a notice issued, and what action is required?
  • Does another restriction remain after any verification or adjustment?
  • What timeframe and starting date apply, and when should I follow up?

Use the number on a verified notice first. General individual account assistance is available at 800-829-1040. Check IRS contact guidance and official refund information .

What if the freeze is causing financial hardship?

Review Taxpayer Advocate Service assistance criteria . Eligible taxpayers may request help with hardship or unresolved IRS problems. Assistance does not guarantee immediate release.

IRS Code 810 frequently asked questions

Does Code 810 mean my refund was denied?

The code records a freeze, not a universal final denial decision. Read the IRS explanation.

Does it prove fraud?

No. The code alone does not establish the reason or a final finding.

Does it mean an audit?

The code alone does not identify the process. Use the correspondence and account details.

Why is the amount $0.00?

The restriction can affect credit release without changing the dollar balance through that row.

Is my bank account frozen?

Code 810 is an IRS account restriction; it is not proof of a bank-account freeze.

Does verification automatically remove it?

Do not assume every freeze involves verification or that completing one step resolves all restrictions.

What does Code 811 mean afterward?

It reverses Code 810 wholly or partly. It is not a new manual review or a refund transaction.

Does Code 571 clear Code 810?

Do not assume that. Code 571 addresses the related Code 570 hold; a separate restriction needs separate review.

Can my refund amount change?

Read later tax and credit adjustments. A freeze does not establish the final amount.

How many days until payment?

There is no universal countdown from Code 810. Follow applicable instructions and personalized IRS status.

Identify the restriction. Follow the applicable instruction.

Code 810 tells you a freeze was recorded. The full account and IRS explanation tell you why it matters, whether you need to act, and what must be checked before expecting payment.
